On 21 July, the UK government announced that NHS staff in England and Wales will be given a 3% pay rise for 2021-22.
With inflation expected to hit 3.7% this year, this pay 'rise' is effectively another pay cut. Ministers had a choice - and with this pay deal they've shown they do not value hardworking nursing staff.
This is another bitter blow for the profession. At a time when many experienced nurses are burnt out, exhausted and considering leaving the career they love, the link between low pay, staff shortages and patient safety becomes even more stark.
Funding our health and care system is a political choice. After years of inadequate support for the largest health and social care workforce, the UK government must take immediate action and fully fund a substantial pay rise for nursing.
